The worse thing about living in a car was that you always knew when your roommate got lucky. He wasn’t there when you went to sleep, and returned with cheap perfume on his shirt that stunk up the whole car.
Ginji lay awake even though it was well past midnight. It wasn’t the light from an overhead streetlamp, or the uncomfortable backseat, or even the yowling tomcat keeping him awake.
Ban had gone to town, alone, and had not come back yet.
Ginji told himself that the knots in his stomach were from worry over Ban-chan’s safety.

Madoka had finished playing. Her violin was in its case, waiting for its owner. Mozart was also waiting, watching both Madoka and Shido from his mistress’s side. Shido was lying in the grass.
“Thank you for coming out here to play.”
“I don’t mind. I like playing out here.”
As a guide dog Mozart had learned not to jump. So he didn’t jump. He pushed.
Shido caught Madoka in his arms, using his body to shield hers from the ground as she fell. They wound up nose to nose, almost kissing. Both blushed.
Mozart barked and wagged his tail.
